Pastoral Staff:

The Rev. Dr. Charles Berthoud,
Pastor/Head of Staff

Charlie has been pastor at Covenant since February 2013, and he loves Covenant and Madison.

He shares: "Being a Christian is about loving God and loving our neighbors. At Covenant, we try to learn what that means and then live it. The people of Covenant are thoughtful and engaged, and together, we ask questions and care for each other on the journey, as we try to make a difference in the world. Together we are learning about God's love and living God's love."

Prior to Covenant, Charlie spent ten years as Pastor/Head of Staff at John McMillan Presbyterian, near Pittsburgh. Previously he served Associate Pastor at churches in Richmond, VA and near Philadelphia, where he was involved with youth ministry, mission, worship and pastoral care.

In 2012, Charlie finished the Doctor of Ministry degree from Columbia Theological Seminary, with a focus on Christian spirituality. In 1991, he graduated from Union Seminary in New York City, with a M. Div., after writing a thesis on the Presbyterian Church in Cuba. Charlie grew up in Connecticut and graduated from Wesleyan University in 1986 with a BA in Sociology and Latin American Studies. He spent 1986-87 in Nicaragua with Witness for Peace and since then has led many trips to Latin America. He grew up in Connecticut and was baptized, confirmed, and ordained as a pastor at Westminster Presbyterian Church in West Hartford.

Charlie is married to Chris Turner and they have two teenage boys, James and Matthew. As a family, they enjoy biking, basketball, swimming, along with board games, puzzles, good movies, bad jokes, and cheese. They really like cheese. Despite being a lifelong (and long-suffering) fan of the New York Jets, Charlie has taken quite a liking to the Green Bay Packers. Contact Pastor Charlie
